Asia: Turmeric

 

The use of turmeric dates back thousands of years and has been traditionally used in southern Asia for both cooking — dried turmeric is responsible for the rich, yellow colour of some curries — and also for its therapeutic effects.

Recently, turmeric has been receiving a lot of attention for its health benefits as a potent antioxidant and for its anti-inflammatory properties. Research has found that turmeric can provide beneficial effects for those with disorders related to inflammation, such as ulcerative colitis, and even reduce plaque build-up to prevent heart disease.

Turmeric’s antioxidant properties are not only seen when ingested, but also when applied topically on the skin. Try this quick and easy turmeric face mask: Mix 5 ml (1 tsp) coconut flour, 5 ml (1 tsp) turmeric, 5 ml (1 tsp) of honey, and 30 ml (2 tbsp) almond milk to make a paste. Apply a thin layer to your face and let dry for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off with water for rejuvenated skin!

Some people find that turmeric may make their skin slightly yellow after application. We would encourage you to try out this mask on another part of your skin before trying it on your face.
